Monitoring

Because the 4XTRA system runs on a number of PCs, it incorporates a 4XTRA monitor facility which allows any PC to view the key system activities. This highlights problems as they occur and gives a quick overview of the 4XTRA system status. It is invaluable when 4XTRA users are in different locations, to help to trace problems to particular users or machines.

The 4XTRA file server can be used to monitor activity on the network, showing traffic, who is active and using files, status of printers, and can also be useful in tracking problems.

Using the 4XTRA monitor

To use the monitor facilities you need to be signed on as HMW. For more details on signing on, see the 4XTRA Dealing and Position Keeping guide.
1 Sign on with user id HMW and the relevant password for your site. The system then prompts you with "Who are you?".
2 Type your first name if you are a 4XTRA team member or OPER. Once you have signed on, the cursor is positioned over the Monitor option on the Operator menu.

3 Select Monitor to go to the system monitor which detects errors and informs you of the progress of all the deals which have been input, for example, whether they have been sent to the back office system, whether they still require instructions, or how many unconfirmed deals are still outstanding.

Daytime

During the trading day the, the monitor screen shows:

  Printer status
Total number of deals input today
The number of deals processed by SENDEALS (number of tickets printed) and the backlog
Time the last deal was detected
COB time, status and rate if it has been done
  Overnight batch start time
  Number of NNN deals outstanding
  Number of deals without instructions
Total of NNNs and deals without instructions
Status of static update, showing the ID of the user updating, and the time started
Error detection is shown by an alert box describing the error condition placed over the monitor screen.

Overnight

While the overnight is being run the monitor screen shows how the batch is progressing. For further details of the monitor subsystem (4ARMS)
  Note:
This screen can also be viewed during the on-line day by selecting Batch Monitor on the Monitor screen to show the daytime jobs running and their current status.

Using the file server console

You can also use the server console Monitor Screen option to look at the activity on the system. The top half of the screen shows the server usage, and the bottom half allows you to investigate which users are signed on and what files they are accessing.

Using NOVELL commands from your terminal

You can use NOVELL commands to examine and modify print queues, salvage and purge files and set time.
PCONSOLE to investigate and manage print queues
PURGE ALL to release file space on the server
SALVAGE to restore an old file
SET TIME  to change the server time
